Multiple Phase Heritage Restoration

Restoring a site as prestigious as Allen Hall—the Roman Catholic seminary of the Province of Westminster—required a scaffold solution that was as much about preservation as it was about access. Situated on the historic site of St Thomas More’s former residence, the project involved a multi-phase restoration of the theological college's facade and roof.

  • Phased Access: The project was divided into strategic phases to allow restoration work to proceed systematically across the historic campus without closing the entire site.

  • Heritage Sensitivity: The scaffolding was designed to provide comprehensive access to the building's envelope while ensuring zero impact on the surviving 16th-century garden walls and other historically protected elements.

  • Chelsea Logistics: Located in the heart of the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the site required a compact, tidy, and highly organized scaffold footprint to comply with strict local authority regulations.

Respecting a Sacred & Historic Site

Working on a site of such immense historical and spiritual importance presented a set of challenges that went far beyond standard construction logic.

  • Historically Important Site: With the legacy of St Thomas More woven into the grounds, the site demanded a level of care far above the norm. Every base plate and tie-in had to be considered to ensure no damage occurred to the ancient fabric of the grounds.

  • Tactfulness & Discretion: Allen Hall is a place of study, prayer, and residence. Maintaining a tactful presence was essential. Our teams had to work with minimal noise disruption and maintain a professional "low-profile" to respect the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of the seminary.

  • Logistical Constraints: The narrow Chelsea streets and the delicate nature of the 16th-century walls meant that material movement had to be executed with extreme precision—there was no room for heavy-handedness.

Collaborative approach

Collaborative approach

Success at Allen Hall was achieved through a combination of technical skill and a deep respect for the environment.

  • Collaborative Approach with All Trades: Heritage restoration is a team effort. We worked in lockstep with Highview’s teams. By attending joint site meetings and adapting our lifts to the specific needs of the artisans, we ensured they had the perfect "reach" for delicate restoration tasks.

  • The Right Scaffolders for the Job: Not every crew is suited for a heritage environment. We deployed our most experienced, senior scaffolders to Allen Hall, personnel known for their professionalism, communication skills, and "soft touch" when working around sensitive structures and members of the public.
