Horizon Construction was appointed to deliver a new basketball hall for the City of London Academy. To facilitate this large-volume, high-ceiling sports structure, we provided a comprehensive suite of commercial scaffolding solutions engineered for both internal fit-outs and external envelope construction.
Heavy-Duty Brickwork Scaffolds: We erected progressive, fully compliant external scaffolds to support the brickwork teams as the sports hall’s high-elevation perimeter walls were built.
Extensive Internal Birdcages: Due to the expansive height and span of a professional basketball hall, we designed and installed high-density internal birdcage scaffolding. This provided a massive, continuous, and rock-solid working platform across the entire upper volume of the hall for roof structural installations, lighting grids, and ceiling finishes.
High-Capacity Loading Bays: To keep pace with the structural build, we integrated heavy-duty loading bays into the external scaffold, allowing the safe mechanical placement and storage of heavy masonry, steelwork, and blockwork components right where the trades needed them.
Constructing a major new sports facility within a live, inner-city educational campus introduced extreme physical and scheduling pressures.
Tight Site Constraints: Space was at an absolute premium. The footprint for the new basketball hall was tightly hemmed in by existing academy buildings, active recreational areas, and perimeter boundaries. There was virtually no storage space for scaffolding tubes, boards, or fittings.
Tight Programme: Horizon Construction operated under a compressed timeline to ensure the noisy and high-impact structural phases were completed swiftly, minimizing long-term disruption to the academy's academic calendar.
Live Educational Environment: Student safety was the paramount priority. We had to manage all scaffolding operations—including heavy material handling and high-level erecting—right alongside an active school population, demanding strict hazard segregation and absolute control over our working boundaries.
We matched Horizon Construction’s fast-track schedule by deploying highly adaptable scaffolding configurations and a strict logistical framework.
Micro-Phased "Just-in-Time" Deliveries: To conquer the "tight site" bottleneck, we abandoned traditional mass-material storage. Instead, we coordinated precise, scheduled delivery windows with Horizon’s site team. Materials arrived in phased batches and went directly from the transport vehicles straight into the build, keeping the surrounding academy grounds clear and safe.
Rapid Birdcage & Scaffold Execution: Our highly hardworking and competent scaffolding crews worked systematically to erect the vast internal birdcages and external brickwork scaffolds. By utilizing efficient, smart handover sequencing, we ensured the bricklayers and internal fit-out trades could step onto fully compliant platforms the moment a lift was completed.
Proactive Site Collaboration: We worked in lockstep with Horizon Construction’s project managers to navigate the tight programme. Our supervisor maintained daily communication to adapt scaffold lifts dynamically around structural steel arrivals and concrete pours, ensuring zero downtime and maintaining an impeccable safety record within the live school environment.
