Aviation Infrastructure Support at EFDC Operation Hub

KAS Scaffolding Ltd was appointed by Barnes Construction to deliver a specialised scaffolding package for the EFDC Operation Hub at North Weald Airport in Essex.

The 12-week programme required the design, supply, and erection of access solutions to support the construction of new aviation infrastructure, including a transport hangar and an adjacent office block.

The comprehensive scope encompassed external and internal masonry scaffolds, birdcage platforms for the office plant, and an external TG20 independent scaffold to provide roof access for a photovoltaic (PV) installation. Furthermore, a proprietary Layher system staircase was integrated to ensure safe, multi-level access for site personnel.

Airfield Environments and Strict Handover Protocols

Working within an active airfield environment like North Weald Airport presented unique logistical constraints, particularly regarding the construction of the transport hangar and adjacent facilities.

The scope demanded adaptable solutions, such as internal platforms within the hangar itself, which had to be carefully managed to support masonry work without disrupting the wider site programme. Additionally, the site operated under stringent health, safety, and quality control protocols; Barnes Construction mandated that all structures be strictly erected in a single operation without partial visits, requiring precise scheduling.

Any incomplete working platform required prominent safety signage, and full handover certificates had to be meticulously processed before any trade could access the scaffolds.

TG20 Compliant Engineering and Methodical Execution

TG20 Compliant Engineering and Methodical Execution

To navigate these structural and procedural demands, KAS Scaffolding engineered all access structures in strict accordance with TG20:21 regulations.

To support the external masonry works safely, the scaffolding was robustly tied following TG4 guidelines, whilst the roof perimeters were secured using 36 linear metres of proprietary self-weighted handrails. Continuous regulatory compliance and on-site safety were guaranteed by KAS Scaffolding implementing a mandatory 'Scafftag' system.

This involved rigorous weekly inspections carried out by their competent, CISRS-certified professionals, ensuring uninterrupted and secure access for all trades throughout the duration of the JCT 2016 Design and Build main contract.
