Lightweight Access Scaffolding for Mortuary Expansion at Southend Hospital

KAS Scaffolding Ltd was appointed by Barnes Construction to provide a specialised scaffolding package for the mortuary expansion project at Southend University Hospital in Essex. The specific scope of works required the design, supply, and erection of a lightweight aluminium roof-level scaffold.

The access solution was engineered to facilitate critical construction activities whilst adhering to the strict operational protocols of an amended JCT Standard Building Contract. The package was meticulously programmed for a precise delivery window.

Tactful Operations in a Highly Sensitive Healthcare Environment

Working on a mortuary expansion within a live, operational hospital environment presented profound logistical and behavioural challenges. The most critical constraint was the highly sensitive nature of the building itself, demanding absolute discretion and respect for hospital occupants, grieving families, and medical staff.

Any disruptive noise, disorganised materials, or excessive footprint could cause severe distress. Furthermore, the project required flawless scheduling to meet the tight erection window, coupled with the logistical challenge of safely erecting a roof-level structure without impeding day-to-day hospital operations.

Discreet Execution and Lightweight Aluminium Design

To mitigate the impact on the sensitive hospital environment, KAS Scaffolding deliberately deployed a lightweight aluminium scaffolding system.

This material choice significantly reduced transport logistics, erection noise, and structural loading compared to traditional steel tubing, enabling a much quieter and faster build. The works were meticulously coordinated with the main contractor's site manager to ensure zero disruption to the mortuary's ongoing operations and the surrounding hospital wards.

Prior to commencement, all personnel strictly adhered to comprehensive site-specific risk assessments and method statements tailored to the stringent health and safety requirements of the healthcare setting.

By executing the precise programme discreetly and efficiently, KAS Scaffolding provided safe roof-level access while maintaining the absolute dignity and tact required for the location
